Role: Junior Image Processing Engineer
Function: Computer Vision & Machine Learning
Location: Hebbal - Bangalore
Type: Full-time
Industry: Aviation & Aerospace
About Company
A venture-backed startup founded in 2023, revolutionizing the space component supply chain. The company delivers low-cost, reliable spacecraft components for LEO satellites.
They specialize in Attitude Determination and Control System components like reaction wheels, star trackers, and torque rods. The team operates globally across the US and India, helping satellite manufacturers reduce costs and lead times.
Position Overview
You'll develop cutting-edge image processing algorithms that power ground-based telescopes for satellite navigation systems. You'll design ML/DL models for astronomical object detection, focusing on star tracking and celestial object classification to support critical spacecraft orientation systems. This role offers direct impact on space technology that keeps satellites operational in orbit.
Role & Responsibilities
- You design and develop high-performance ML/DL models for object detection in astronomical images (stars as spots/blobs, objects as streaks/lines)
- You implement detection and classification algorithms to distinguish between stellar blobs and object streaks with sub-pixel accuracy
- You train and test models using synthetic and real astronomical image datasets
- You document model performance evaluation and report coordinate retrieval with sub-pixel precision
- You optimize algorithms for real-sky conditions including various signal and noise environments
- You collaborate with hardware teams to integrate image processing solutions with ADCS components
- You deliver technical documentation and briefings on algorithm performance and implementation
Must Have Criteria
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics, Physics, Data Science, Astronomy, or related technical field
- 0-2 years of experience with image processing algorithms and machine learning (fresh graduates welcome)
- Strong proficiency in Python with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) implementation skills
- Academic or project experience with CNN architectures for object detection and classification
- Hands-on experience with PyTorch and TensorFlow/Keras through coursework or personal projects
- Familiarity with scientific Python libraries: Astropy, Scikit-learn, and SciPy
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to learn independently
Nice to Have
- Understanding of astronomical images and signal/noise conditions in real-sky imaging
- Knowledge of Bayesian methods and probabilistic models for orientation estimation
- Experience with OpenCV for computer vision tasks and image preprocessing
- Git repository management experience and version control best practices
- Academic projects or internships in aerospace, astronomy, or satellite imaging applications
What We Offer
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge space technology at a venture-backed startup
- Direct impact on revolutionizing the space component supply chain
- Collaborative environment with experienced engineers from high-volume scaleups
- Exposure to both US and India operations in the growing commercial space ecosystem
- Ground-floor opportunity in a mission-focused, rapidly scaling organization
