Role: Image Processing Engineering/ StarTracker Algorithm Developer
Function: Engineering
Location: Hebbal, Bangalore
Type: Full-time
Industry: Aviation & Aerospace
About Company
A venture-backed startup founded in 2023, revolutionizing the space component supply chain. The company delivers low-cost, reliable spacecraft components for low-earth-orbit satellites.
They specialize in Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) components like reaction wheels, star trackers, and torque rods. The team helps satellite manufacturers reduce lead times and costs.
With $2.2M in funding and operations across the U.S. and India, they're making high-quality space components more accessible to support the growing commercial space ecosystem.
Position Overview
You'll develop and optimize critical image processing algorithms that directly power ADCS systems for satellites in orbit. You'll work on star detection and object tracking algorithms that keep spacecraft operational, collaborating closely with embedded engineers to deploy flight-ready solutions. You'll have direct impact on satellite missions while working with a dynamic seed-stage team of 6 engineers building essential hardware for space exploration.
Role & Responsibilities
- You analyze, understand, and enhance existing image processing modules used for object detection in space applications
- You develop, debug, and optimize algorithms for detecting stars and objects (blobs/streaks) from telescope and satellite imagery
- You monitor real-time observations from ground-based telescope systems and troubleshoot backend processing issues
- You design and integrate new modules to improve detection accuracy, robustness, and performance across various observing conditions
- You evaluate and document algorithm performance metrics, maintain detailed reports, and propose improvements for future iterations
- You collaborate closely with embedded engineers to develop and deploy flight-ready algorithms for satellite onboard processing systems
- You implement data pre-processing techniques including background noise removal, image enhancement, and thresholding
Must Have Criteria
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Astronomy or related field
- 3-7 years of research or industry experience in image processing algorithms and computer vision
- Proficiency in Python programming with strong Object Oriented Programming (OOP) implementation skills
- Hands-on experience creating image processing and computer vision algorithms for object detection and feature extraction
- Experience with data pre-processing techniques like background noise removal, image enhancement, and thresholding
- Experience with OpenCV, NumPy, and scikit-image libraries for computer vision applications
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with ability to work independently
Nice to Have
- Experience with astronomy or space-based imaging applications
- Proficiency in deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow or PyTorch) for computer vision tasks
- Knowledge of Astropy, Scikit-learn, and Scipy libraries
- Git repository management expertise and experience with real-time image processing systems
- Experience with mobile computer vision applications or edge deployment of ML models
What We Offer
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge space technology at a venture-backed startup
- Direct impact on satellite missions and space exploration
- Collaborative environment with experienced engineers from high-volume scaleups
- Exposure to both hardware and software aspects of space systems
